Seaweed Fiber Material FAQs

What is the advantage of using seaweed in your clothes?
Aside from providing a sustainable alternative to traditional materials, the patented fiber gives ultimate wearing comfort due to its soft feel and great moisture absorption. It also wears and washes well and is biodegradable and compostable. It’s inventors also believe that it has a positive effect on the body when worn next to the skin. Saltwater seaweed is rich in essential substances (like vitamins, antioxidants, trace elements, amino acids and minerals) which are known to have many positive effects. They can help protect us against some of everyday life’s environmental influences such as free radicals, and help to activate cell regeneration, which in turn can help to relieve skin diseases, reduce inflammation and soothe itchiness. The inventors believe the natural moisture level of the body could enable an active exchange of these beneficial substances between fiber and skin, providing noticeable benefits.

Can I wash my seaweed fiber t-shirt in the washing machine?
Yes. A patented process embeds the seaweed particles firmly within a natural cellulose fiber. As a result, the positive properties of the seaweed are permanently preserved within the fiber, even after multiple washing cycles.

I love sushi. Can I eat your seaweed fiber t-shirt?
If it was pure seaweed, this could be a possibility! But we also use cellulose wood fibers and organic cotton so while it’s natural, it’s not edible.

How is your seaweed fiber made?
It’s a patented process that has taken a long time to perfect. Our sustainably grown organic seaweed is gently harvested on a four-year rotation from living plants in a natural ocean habitat. With the ability to regenerate naturally, the plants grow abundantly and without the need for the land, fresh water and pesticides used in traditional farming. All the seaweed’s ecological value is retained, and no chemicals or treatments are used - it’s simply dried, crushed, finely ground and added to a sustainable wood-based cellulose solution as part of the lyocell fiber-making process. This is an innovative and eco-friendly production method which takes place in a closed solvent loop with no chemicals released as waste. This meets the expectations of our industry both today and in the future. The resulting fiber is carbon neutral and completely biodegradable, made using methods that save energy and resources.
